For a time, it was the worst kept secret in the auto industry, but its finally official today when German luxury car maker Audi and its parent company Volkswagen announced the acquisition of Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. Founded by Adriano and Marcello Ducati back in 1926, the Bologna-base super bike brand fit in nicely with Audi’s other two Italian acquisitions over the past few decades – super car maker Lamborghini in 1998 and automotive design firm Italdesign in 2010. The Ducati purchase, which valued by some to be around $1.1 billion dollars, also put Audi squarely in the position to overtake BMW, currently world’s top luxury auto manufacturer as well as premium motorcycle maker with brands BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna.
